Using AI Safely: Privacy, Honesty and Common Mistakes

This final lesson ties everything together: how to get the benefits of AI while protecting yourself, your data and the people who trust your work.

Never paste these into an AI chat

  • Passwords, one-time codes (OTP), bank card or account numbers.
  • National ID, passport or other identity numbers.
  • Other people’s private information without their permission.
  • Confidential company data in tools your employer has not approved.

Protect your data

  • Review each tool’s data settings: chat history, memory, and whether chats are used for training.
  • Use temporary or incognito chat modes for sensitive questions.
  • Delete old chats you no longer need.
  • Use official apps and websites — fake “AI” apps are a common way to steal accounts.

Be honest about AI use

Follow the rules of your school, employer or publisher. When AI helped substantially with something you share, disclose it where that is expected. You remain responsible for accuracy — “the AI said so” is never a defence.

Spot AI-powered scams

  • Voice-cloned calls asking for urgent money — hang up and call the person back on a known number.
  • Fake videos of public figures promoting investments.
  • Messages that are perfectly written but create urgency and ask for codes or payments.

The most common beginner mistakes

  • Prompts that are too short — give context.
  • Trusting numbers and citations without checking.
  • One giant request instead of steps.
  • Staying in one endless chat for unrelated tasks.
  • Giving up after the first answer instead of giving feedback.

You finished the course — what next?

Pick one real task you do every week and use AI for it for the next seven days, using the prompt formula from Lesson 4. Then explore the tool directory to find specialised tools for your field, and build your first custom assistant or Skill when you notice yourself repeating instructions.

Key takeaways

  • ★ Never share passwords, codes, ID numbers or others’ private data.
  • ★ Check data settings and use official apps.
  • ★ Stay honest and responsible for what you submit.
